Zoomorphic looks at the emerging trend towards buildings that emulate nature, showing leading contemporary architecture inspired by animal forms. Preserved animal specimens placed alongside architects’ models explain the zoomorphic analogy in buildings resembling armadillos and anteaters, birds and fishes, and a myriad other creatures.

The exhibition features work by leading British figures such as Norman Foster & Partners, Wilkinson Eyre and Ushida Findlay, as well as international architects including Frank Gehry and Santiago Calatrava. Some employ animal metaphors quite explicitly to create instantly popular landmark buildings, whereas for others the animal likeness emerges as the design evolves.

Zoomorphic explains why all this is happening now, as architects use increasingly sophisticated computer programmes to generate designs with extraordinary new shapes, while talented structural engineers and new materials ensure that their fantastic dreams can be realised.

Exhibition conceived and curated by Hugh Aldersey Williams and first shown at the V&A, London. Zoomorphic is supported by Brown & Scarlett Architects and Land Charter, a partnership of architect and developer in shaping the architectural heritage of Bury St Edmunds
