Artists: Norman Adams RA, Oliver Barratt, Mark Cazalet, Jane Dowling, Laurence Edwards, Francis Hoyland, Michael Kenny, Richard Kenton Webb RA, Lino Mannocci, Nicholas Mynheer, Robert Natkin, Gigi Sudbury, Adrian Wiszniewski. Just as the crusaders of the Middle Ages set off to Jerusalem to experience Christ's last journey, 'Stations' provided the opportunity to set off on a journey of discovery to see new and exciting interpretions of the most famous story of all time. Over the past two years thirteen artists made sets of Stations of the Cross for Suffolk churches. Each artist interpreted the story in their own way, using abstract or figurative imagery, creating paintings, prints or sculptures. Stations of the Cross usually comprise fourteen images of stages in Christ's last journey, from his conviction by Pilate to his entombment. They date from the Middle Ages, when pilgrims to the Holy Land wished to commemorate their experience. Over the centuries stations have developed into a rich and symbolic aid to prayer and contemplation. The events of the passion have timeless relevance, incorporating love and hatred, power and justice, suffering and persecution. An 82 page full colour catalogue, with essay by Canon Richard Davey and pictures of the artist work is available. Price £7.50 plus post and packing. See ordering page for details. The sets of stations by Francis Hoyland (Needham Market) and Nicholas Mynheer (Sudbury) have been purchased by the congregations and remain on permanent display. |
