exploring difference and cultural identity
through jewellery, photography and installation.

The works in SELF are all intensely personal, as each
artist responds to their own experiences. Instead of focusing on divisive
terms such as 'them', 'us' and 'others', visitors will be encouraged to
find common ground and value cultural diversity and difference.
We are surrounded by portraits of ourselves and others; we have all had
our photographs taken. But what do these images record, how much do they
reveal about us and what assumptions are made when they are seen by others?
Lorna Simpson's work challenges racial stereotypes. Clement
Cooper's photographs of Muslim women wearing the hijab emphasise
their 'power and identity’ as individuals. Gerd Rothmann
creates jewellery from casts of fingerprints or skin. Through 8ft x 6ft
portraits, Ken Ohara focuses our attention on the minute
differences in faces.
Some of the artists investigate cultural identity. Patricio Forrester's
series of jackets is painted with the words 'You are not even British…'
in different languages. Joyce Scott makes beadwork necklaces
influenced by her American Indian background and Pamela So
explores her Chinese-Scottish background through pattern and textiles.
Other artists` work reflects change; Martin Figura photographed
his son every month during his teenage years and Dinie Besems'
chalk necklace and Karl Fritsch's rings are worn away
by their owners.
