17 January - 21 February
Since the age of five Derrick Greaves has spent many hours drawing, as a young man he trained as an apprentice sign writer, and then went on to study painting at the Royal College of Art. The extraordinary work in this exhibition is the result of a combination of these skills, together with experience gained over many years of painting.
Although the paintings are carefully planned through pencil lines drawn on a grid, and then copied onto canvas, the final lines are painted with a sweeping stroke, a free movement of the arm and mind, with his subconscious directing the work. This freedom breathes life into the work and grabs the viewers attention, but it is the subtle qualities of the paintings, the layering of the image or tonal variation in the paint which holds the gaze.
For the past twenty years, Derrick Greaves has been based in Norfolk and although in his seventies, he is still producing 'modern images, rooted in the present' (James Hyman). Most of the paintings and prints are for sale and are available to buy through the ifree|art scheme, please ask Gallery staff for details. There is also a catalogue, price £10.
This exhibition has been organised in collaboration with James Hyman Fine Art, London
