Today’s society
has a fascination with fairy tales, myths, witchcraft and folklore.
In this enchanting exhibition, contemporary artists explore the magic,
innocence and danger lurking in fairy tales, the myth of the outsider
and imagined worlds; worlds in which wishes and talismans can instantly
deliver all that one desires or protect one from harm.
The exhibition
features Julie Nord’s extraordinary paintings
which draw on Alice in Wonderland, Lyndall Phelps’
spectacular Red Rope, a red knitted rope, 100 m long, descending through
the ceiling of the Gallery, poised to rescue, and Catrin Howell’s
animals drawn from ancient myths. Closer to home, Martyn
Wainwright’s works refer to the events of the 1645-47 ‘East
Anglian Witchcraft Trials’, whilst exploring broader perceptions
of nefarious magic and notions of ‘the witch’ entertained
throughout history and across cultures.
